HAVIKWAY Expedition

Why this
journey exists.

HAVIKWAY is a long-distance walking expedition built around movement, people, places and the reality of travelling through the world at human speed.

The mission is not simply to reach a distant destination. It is to document what happens between the starting point and everything that comes after it.

The mission

To experience the world slowly enough to understand it.

Modern travel is often measured in destinations. HAVIKWAY is interested in the distance between them.

Walking changes the relationship with geography. Distances become real. Weather matters. Terrain matters. A small village becomes part of the journey instead of something passed at highway speed.

The expedition is intended to document those small places, local encounters, difficult decisions and ordinary moments that are often invisible in conventional travel.

The result is not intended to be a perfect story. It is intended to be an honest record of a long journey.

Why walking

The speed of the journey changes the story.

Walking removes many of the barriers between the traveller, the landscape and the people who live along the route.

01

Distance becomes real.

A hundred kilometres is no longer an abstract number. It becomes roads, hills, villages, weather and several days of physical movement.

02

Small places matter.

Walking naturally leads through local roads and communities that would normally disappear between major destinations.

03

People become part of the route.

Encounters happen naturally when movement is slow enough to stop, speak, listen and remain in one place.

04

The difficult parts remain visible.

Heat, cold, tiredness, uncertainty and route changes are not edited out. They are part of what the expedition means.

What HAVIKWAY documents

More than landscapes.

The expedition journal is intended to become a long-term record of movement across regions, cultures and changing circumstances.

People

Encounters along the road.

Conversations, hospitality, different ways of living and the people who become part of the journey.

Places

Geography at walking speed.

Cities, villages, mountains, deserts, coastlines, border regions and places rarely represented by famous landmarks.

Reality

The difficult days too.

Failed plans, equipment problems, weather, bureaucracy, exhaustion and decisions to stop, wait or change direction.

Change

A world seen over years.

Because HAVIKWAY is a long-duration expedition, the project can also document how places and circumstances change over time.

Expedition principles

What guides the journey.

The route can change, but the principles behind HAVIKWAY should remain consistent.

01

Stay honest.

Document what actually happens rather than creating an artificial image of constant adventure.

02

Stay flexible.

No route is more important than safety, health, legal access or conditions on the ground.

03

Respect the places.

The expedition passes through communities that are people's homes, not simply locations on a travel map.

04

Keep moving with purpose.

Progress matters, but not at the expense of the reasons the expedition exists in the first place.

05

Keep the journey transparent.

Route decisions, support, challenges and changes should remain understandable to people following HAVIKWAY.

06

Let the road influence the story.

HAVIKWAY is not designed around a fixed script. Unexpected places and encounters are part of the project.

NOT A RACE
No artificial schedule

The journey must remain capable of changing.

A multi-year walking expedition cannot be treated like a timetable where every border and season behaves exactly as expected.

Political conditions change. Visa rules change. Roads become inaccessible. Winters arrive. Equipment fails. Sometimes the responsible decision is to wait.

HAVIKWAY therefore has a direction and a long-term route, but not an obligation to preserve every kilometre of an early plan.

The public record

The journal is part of the mission.

The expedition only becomes a meaningful record if the journey is documented while it is happening.

Journal entries can include route notes, photography, observations, people encountered along the road, equipment experiences and the reasoning behind major expedition decisions.
