Why HAVIKWAY

A hawk.
A road.
A direction.

HAVIKWAY is more than a project name. It brings together the idea of the hawk above, the road ahead and a journey that keeps moving toward the unknown.

The name is intended to be simple, memorable and strong enough to live on a website, a map, a backpack, a cap or a shirt without losing its meaning.

The name

HAVIK + WAY.

The name combines two ideas: the hawk and the road.

“Havik” is a Dutch word associated with the hawk, while “way” gives the name movement, direction and the sense of a path still being travelled.

Together, HAVIKWAY feels connected to the Netherlands, where this chapter of the journey begins, while still remaining understandable as an international expedition brand.

It does not describe one country, one destination or one fixed route. That matters because the expedition itself is designed to evolve over many years.

A name for a journey this long also has to survive change. The countries may change, the route may bend, seasons may force pauses and the expedition may develop in ways that cannot be predicted from Amsterdam. HAVIKWAY is deliberately broad enough to remain relevant through those changes.

Name construction

One word built from two different ideas.

The strength of HAVIKWAY comes from the tension between looking outward and moving forward: perspective above, movement below.

OBSERVATION HAVIK

A Dutch reference that connects the identity to the place where this phase of the expedition was conceived and prepared.

MOVEMENT WAY

An international word for direction, path and continuation — something still being travelled rather than already completed.

ONE IDENTITY HAVIKWAY

A name for a project that watches carefully, adapts when necessary and keeps moving toward a wider horizon.

HAVIK WAY
Two parts, one identity

The name carries both observation and movement.

HAVIK looks outward. WAY moves forward.

The hawk represents awareness, distance, perspective and the ability to see beyond what is immediately in front.

The road represents movement, uncertainty, persistence and the reality that every destination is reached through a sequence of ordinary steps.

The hawk

A symbol of perspective.

The hawk in HAVIKWAY is not decoration. It represents the way the project tries to look at the road.

01

Perspective

The ability to step back mentally, see the larger direction and avoid becoming trapped by one difficult day or one temporary obstacle.

02

Awareness

Moving through unfamiliar places requires attention: to weather, people, borders, terrain and changing conditions.

03

Freedom

The hawk also suggests open space and the freedom to choose a different direction when the original route no longer makes sense.

04

Distance

HAVIKWAY is designed around a very long horizon. The symbol should feel appropriate for both the first kilometre and the far end of the journey.

The complete symbol

The hawk only makes sense when there is a road beneath it.

The visual identity is built around two levels: the wider view from above and the human-scale reality of the route below.

ABOVE See farther.

Perspective helps separate a temporary problem from the larger direction of an expedition measured in years.

BELOW Stay grounded.

The real journey still happens on foot — through weather, terrain, borders, fatigue and ordinary daily decisions.

TOGETHER Adapt without losing direction.

HAVIKWAY is intended to remain flexible without becoming aimless: change the route when reality requires it, but preserve the larger purpose.

The road

The road is the second half of the symbol.

01
Direction

HAVIKWAY has a direction, but not a rigid line that must be followed at any cost.

02
Movement

The project only becomes real through movement: one day, one place and one decision at a time.

03
Continuity

A road connects separate places into one story. That is exactly what the expedition is intended to do.

04
Unknown

A road disappearing into the distance leaves room for what has not happened yet.

Visual identity

Simple enough to travel.

The HAVIKWAY identity needs to work far beyond a website.

It should remain recognizable on a small cap, a shirt, a backpack patch, a printed document, a sponsor presentation or a route marker.

That is why the visual direction stays deliberately simple: a hawk, a road, strong typography and a restrained palette inspired by earth, forest, sand and distance.

The identity should feel adventurous without becoming theatrical, premium without becoming polished beyond the reality of the road.

Visual language

Earth, forest, sand and open distance.

The palette and typography are designed to feel natural beside expedition photography rather than compete with it.

FOREST #26372B

Stability, landscape and the darker visual anchor of the identity.

SAND #B8893D

Route markers, highlights and the warm accent associated with distance.

PAPER #FBFAF6

A quiet editorial surface for long-form stories, maps and documentation.

INK #172019

Strong readable typography that keeps the site grounded and practical.

EDITORIAL VOICE The road is the story.

Serif typography gives longer stories and large statements a documentary, field-journal character.

FIELD LABELS ROUTE / JOURNAL / LIVE / FIELD

Compact uppercase labels bring structure to maps, statistics, equipment records and practical expedition information.

Brand principles

What HAVIKWAY should feel like.

The visual identity should support the expedition, not become more important than the journey itself.

01

Simple

Easy to recognize, reproduce and understand without unnecessary visual complexity.

02

Strong

Clear enough to remain recognizable on both digital and physical expedition material.

03

Human

The brand should never make the expedition feel like a corporation disconnected from the person walking it.

04

Adaptable

It should work equally well in Europe, Africa, Asia and whatever comes after.

Identity in use

One visual system, many physical situations.

A real expedition brand has to keep working after it leaves the browser. The identity should survive dust, rain, printing limitations and small surfaces.

01

Cap

A simplified hawk and road mark should remain recognizable at embroidery scale without fine detail.

02

Shirt

The full wordmark can work as a strong chest, back or sleeve identity without turning expedition clothing into advertising clutter.

03

Patch

A compact badge can identify backpacks, equipment cases and field gear while remaining easy to reproduce.

04

Documents

Sponsor material, route dossiers and media information need a quieter version of the same identity.

FREEDOM PURPOSE JOURNEY
The three words

Freedom. Purpose. Journey.

Three words that summarize what HAVIKWAY is trying to protect.

Freedom means having room to adapt. Purpose means the journey should mean more than distance. Journey means accepting that the road itself is where most of the story will happen.

Beyond the screen

A brand that can be carried on the road.

HAVIKWAY should remain recognizable even when the website is nowhere in sight.

The hawk and road can become part of expedition clothing, caps, patches, equipment labels and printed materials.

That physical identity also helps connect the person, the expedition and the supporters around one visual language.

The goal is not merchandise for its own sake. It is to create a consistent identity that can travel with the expedition.

That consistency also matters for supporters and partners. When the same mark appears on the live map, a field photograph, a backpack patch and a printed report, all of those pieces belong unmistakably to the same long-term story.

HAVIKWAY

Look ahead.
Keep moving.

The hawk gives the perspective. The road gives the direction. The journey gives the name its meaning.
